Meanwhile
The night offered no resistance.
Heads rested in alignment.
Morning arrived unchanged.
Nothing signaled urgency.
No sound crossed the room
to wake anyone.
We knew—
not abruptly,
not painfully—
enough
to locate ourselves
inside the pattern,
to see
how easily
it accommodated us.
Sleep did not excuse.
It proceeded.
The plan was operative.
And so were we.
