Wintry Morning Bird
after River Vetter
A ripple of song across the sky,
the bird slant-rhymes with the sun,
winging long ellipses and parabolas
against a looming waterfall cloud,
dives down, small body of feather,
journeys through a thousand blues,
lands on a branch beside a chimney
belonging to a home on a high hill.
The wintry tree branches make for
many a window of sky to see a bird,
like a snowy bank or ice sheet will
make a large canvas fit for most any
thing in the world, and the notes of
the bird, such notes, float legato all
around, down to the squirrel tucked
within the warmth of tree trunk fork.
In the largest room of this treehouse,
looking out, my hand reaches for yours.
